Glossary of scientific terms
Tactile: Relating to touch.
Tardive dyskinesia: Involuntary movements of the mouth, tongue, and lips can occur and may be associated with choreo-atheroid (purposeless, quick jerky movements that occur suddenly) movements of the trunk and limbs. Some medications prescribed for autism contribute to the development of this condition.
Therapist: A trained professional who works to overcome the effects of developmental problems.
Tuberous sclerosis: An inherited genetic disorder that produces growths in the brain and peripheral nervous system and special skin blemishes.
Vestibular: Pertaining to the sensory system located in the inner ear that allows that body maintain balance and enjoyably participate in movement such as swinging and rough and tumble.
Visual motor: The skill required to carry out a task such as putting a puzzle piece into a puzzle or a key into a keyhole.
Vocational training: Training for a job. Learning skills to perform in the workplace.
William syndrome: A syndrome of infantile hyper-calcaemia (elevated blood-calcium levels), heart abnormalities, and a characteristic facial appearance. As yet, the cause of the syndrome is unknown.
